IVO KAHÁNEK

A mature confidence, brilliant technique, and remarkable interpretations with extraordinary emotional power and depth… Ivo Kahánek enjoys an exceptional position in the eyes of his domestic audience – they are happy to listen to practically anything he plays; because it is always worth it.

“I prepared the programme to suit the atmosphere of the St Agnes Convent. I chose to give dominance to earlier music. At the same time I designed a kind of harmony of contrasts: international music, represented by Bach and Beethoven, frame the beginning and end of the concert, which has a Czech section at its centre – an emotionally charged Janáček and a mystical Kabeláč. So it is an alternation of musical styles, a clash of more objectively sensed and highly subjective music, and finally, an encounter between the worlds of Czech and German music.”

The largest European instrument maker and a traditional producer of master-class concert pianos with a distinctive European sound – since 1853

C. Bechstein organised an extraordinary two-year cycle of Beethoven’s piano sonatas at the St Agnes Convent in Prague. Performing on the D 282 concert grand piano, the charismatic virtuoso Saleem Ashkar rendered all 32 of the maestro’s sonatas – rightly termed The New Testament of Music – during eight evenings in two concert seasons from 2016–18. His precise yet heartfelt performance won him the audience’s respect. The complete set of sonatas was also recorded for the prestigious label Decca.

Influencers of Resonance is a new 2018/19 cycle that loosely follows on the series and introduces four prominent figures of the contemporary Czech piano scene.
