MIROSLAV SEKERA

Miroslav Sekera entered the limelight as one of the brightest talents with aspirations to rank among the Czech musical elite and artists of global repute. He fulfilled all expectations completely. He captivates his audiences with his excellent technique, preparation, focused execution, enormous drive, profound expression, and interpretative approach that stems from an understanding and respect for the intentions of the author. His notes are also resplendent with unpretentious humility, tranquillity, and harmony, yet evince an incredible tension applied with playful ease and devoid of staged affectation. He is not just a brilliant soloist with a wide-ranging repertoire of styles, but also an immensely sensitive collaborator.

Miroslav Sekera (*1975) has been playing the piano since he was three and a half, when his uncommon talent was noticed by Prof. Zdena Janžurová. He also studied the violin. This earned him the role of young Mozart in Miloš Forman’s Oscar-winning biopic Amadeus at the age of six. Upon enrolling at the Prague Conservatoire he focused solely on the piano, although those present at his superb Prague Spring performance with Josef Špaček can well remember how the two swapped instruments for an encore and Sekera played the violin was bravura. He has won recognition at many major competitions, such as the International Johannes Brahms Competition in Pörtschach, Austria, in 2002. In 2006 he released a solo album with the works of Johannes Brahms, Domenico Scarlatti, and Moritz Moszkovski. He recorded three CDs in the US for the contemporary Boston composer Joseph Summer. Spring 2020 should another album released by Supraphon, following on his previous work for the label with Josef Špaček in 2013.

Besides the violinist Špaček, he regularly collaborates with the horn player Radek Baborák, the violinist Olga Šroubková, and the mezzo-soprano Dagmar Pecková. His 2016 solo recitals at the Rudolfinum in Prague with a programme consisting of works by Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt were the sensation of the season; in November 2018 he dazzled the audience of the Rudolf Firkušný Piano Festival: “Sekera pulled at the strings of the piano’s sound potential with the lightness of a feather, but he swept the audience into his magical world of music with the power of a hurricane.” (Harmonie, December 2018).
